Apple Dumplings

This is my absolute favorite recipe for
APPLE DUMPLINGS
  • 2 c. white sugar
  • 2 c. water
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 6 - 8 apples (depending on size), peeled & cored
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. milk
Sauce:  combine sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg; cook for 5 minutes.  Add 1/4 c. butter and stir until butter melts.
Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in the 3/4 c. butter.  Add milk and stir just until moistened.  Roll 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into 6 or 8 squares, depending on how many apples you have.  Place 1 apple on each square.  Sprinkle generously with additional sugar and spices.  Dot with butter and fold corners over the top of the apple.  Pinch edges to enclose the apple and seal the dough.  Place one inch apart in greased baking dish or pan.  Pour the sauce over the dumplings.  Bake at 375° for 35 minutes.
